CBD & Stress: Use These 5 Techniques to Help Manage Your Anxiety

It turns out that we don’t need to invest a ton of time or energy into relieving stress or managing daily stressors. That sentence alone brings us some relief here at Union of Elements. While there are times when it feels that the sky may be falling, we’ve managed to wrangle a few sensible and easily incorporated tips for those seeking some calm among the chaos. What’s great is that the sensible relaxation techniques that follow can be performed in conjunction with a CBD routine for maximum balance in work, life, play and everything in between.

Laugh … seriously

Laughter has physiological effects on the body and according to a study by a reputable Canadian medical journal, many scholars are “giving more credence to positive views about laughter, such as that laughter might reduce stress and improve natural killer cell activity.” Stress hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine and cortisol are potentially reduced in the face of humor or laughter and with that you really don’t have anything to lose by giving laughter a try amidst daily stressors that pop up sometimes without notice.

In an article written by Loretta G. Breuning Ph.D., author of “Your Neurochemical Self” she recommends stockpiling the funny stuff for when you’re feeling blah. Once you’re in the stress zone it may be harder to identify your laugh triggers so prepping in advance makes as much sense as stocking your fridge with healthy snacks to avoid giving in to the junk. So queue your favorite comedy flicks on Netflix, download a handful of YouTube videos that get you rolling or have that friend who moonlights as a stand-up comic on speed dial. The trick here is preparation for when the cortisol kicks in and as always feel free to incorporate CBD into your laugh track — it may just offer an extra added dose of relaxation when you need it most.

Tea, Friend, Walk

We’re aiming for simple solutions to stress. This may have you rolling your eyes but connecting with others is an incredibly powerful way to shed stress. Often our first instinct may be to isolate yet studies show reaching out to our social networks may not only mitigate stress but also enhance self-esteem, lower blood pressure and promote healthy behaviors. During a pandemic, turning to isolation may feel easier than ever before and going on a walk with a friend is a great way to social distance while taking your mind off (or talking through) the triggers that have you feeling like ripping your hair out. Put On Your Favorite Record

Enhancing our health and performance may be as simple as tuning in … to music that is. The relationship between music and health is real and an often welcome influence on our mental wellbeing. Much akin to the recommendation above to “stockpile the funny stuff” we recommend setting aside your favorite stress-relieving records or creating a playlist on Spotify that you can tap into when tension, anxiety or irritability come knocking. If you’re really in a bind, turn to Mozart. If you’re curious why, simply google the “Mozart Effect” and quench your thirst for curiosity.

Journal Without Seeking Perfection

People shy away from keeping a journal for a myriad of reasons. Maybe you’re thinking, “I am not a writer,” “I don’t have enough time,” or “It feels like a lot of commitment.” The reality is that journaling is personal and there is no right or wrong way to put down your thoughts. It’s not the first draft of your best selling novel … so free yourself of grammatical and spelling restraints. Yes, you can journal on your computer but we recommend going the old fashioned route and putting pen to paper (or marker, or colored pencil or crayon … whatever you have handy). A journal entry doesn’t need to feel like a task or a burden. Even plugging a few sentences onto paper can begin to dissolve stress. Also keep in mind that an entry doesn’t have to live forever. Feel free to jot down your thoughts, take a moment to reflect on what you’ve written and toss that page right into the trash.

Queue Your Culinary Side

While the kitchen isn’t everyone’s favorite arena, making your own food will give you greater control over what you’re putting into your body. In general, a healthy diet leads to lower stress levels. Even if you’re not the next Ina Garten, there are thousands of simple and easy recipes out there to choose from. Whether you’re the type who likes to follow a recipe down to the letter or you prefer to blaze your own trail in the kitchen, creating a delicious meal for yourself, your friends or your family can bring joy, satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment to your day.

One of my favorite ways to unwind is to put on a podcast and chop vegetables with a super sharp knife. There is something so methodical and satisfying about the routine of chopping. I suggest you give it a go. Plus, having pre-washed and chopped veggies in the fridge makes prep later in the week or snacking much more convenient.
